Digital Product Passport for Shopify — How to Add a DPP to Your Store

ESPR-Compliant DPP QR Codes for Shopify Merchants — Prepare for EU Requirements from 2027

Updated: July 2026. If you run a Shopify store and sell physical products to EU customers, you may need to prepare for Digital Product Passport (DPP) requirements under the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR, EU 2024/1781). This guide explains what a DPP is, how it applies to Shopify merchants, and how to add DPP functionality to your Shopify store.

What Is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a structured digital record linked to a physical product via a QR code, barcode, or RFID tag. It contains information about the product's material composition, sustainability credentials, repairability, recycled content, supply chain origin, and end-of-life instructions. The DPP is designed to make this information available to consumers, recyclers, and EU market surveillance authorities throughout the product's lifecycle.

Under ESPR, a DPP is not a voluntary sustainability label — it is a technical compliance requirement that must meet specific data format and accessibility standards defined in EU delegated acts. The DPP must be accessible via a standardised data carrier (typically a QR code) on the product and its packaging.

Does Your Shopify Store Need a DPP?

Whether your Shopify store needs a Digital Product Passport depends on what you sell and when. As of July 2026, no product category has a legally mandatory DPP requirement under ESPR except for certain battery products under the separate Battery Regulation (EU 2023/1542). ESPR DPP requirements become mandatory category by category, as the European Commission adopts delegated acts for each product group.

The product categories most likely to be affected first include:

  • Textiles and apparel (clothing, footwear, household textiles): anticipated from approximately 2027 onwards
  • Electronics and electrical equipment: anticipated from approximately 2027 onwards
  • Furniture: anticipated from approximately 2028 onwards
  • Batteries: already mandatory for EV and industrial batteries under Battery Regulation from February 2027

If your Shopify store sells textiles, electronics, or furniture to EU customers, you should prepare for DPP requirements now — even though they are not yet legally mandatory.

How to Add a Digital Product Passport to Your Shopify Store

Adding a Digital Product Passport to your Shopify store involves three components: (1) creating the DPP data record, (2) generating a QR code linked to the DPP, and (3) displaying the QR code on your product pages and packaging.

Step 1: Create Your DPP Data Record

The DPP data record contains the product information that will be accessible via the QR code. For textiles, this typically includes: material composition (fibre content by percentage), care instructions, country of origin, recycled content percentage, and end-of-life guidance. AuraDPP provides a DPP creation interface where you enter your product data and the platform generates a compliant DPP page accessible via a unique URL.

Step 2: Generate a DPP QR Code

Once your DPP data record is created, AuraDPP generates a QR code that links to your product's DPP page. The QR code is print-ready and can be downloaded in multiple formats (PNG, SVG, PDF) for use on product labels, packaging, hangtags, and your Shopify product pages.

Step 3: Add the QR Code to Your Shopify Store

You can display the DPP QR code on your Shopify store in several ways:

  • Product page image: Upload the QR code as an additional product image in Shopify's product editor
  • Product description: Embed the QR code image in your product description HTML
  • Metafields: Use Shopify metafields to store the DPP URL and display it via your theme's liquid templates
  • Product packaging: Print the QR code on product labels, hangtags, or packaging inserts

Shopify DPP vs. GPSR EU Authorized Representative: Two Different Requirements

Shopify merchants selling to EU customers face two distinct EU compliance obligations that are often confused:

ObligationRegulationStatusWho Needs It
EU Authorized Representative (GPSR Responsible Person)GPSR EU 2023/988Mandatory now (since Dec 2024)All non-EU Shopify sellers of physical products to EU consumers
Digital Product Passport (DPP)ESPR EU 2024/1781Anticipated ~2027 for textiles/electronicsShopify sellers of textiles, electronics, furniture to EU consumers

The GPSR EU Authorized Representative requirement is already mandatory. If you sell physical products on Shopify to EU customers and you are not established in the EU, you must already have an EU Authorized Representative. The DPP requirement is anticipated but not yet mandatory for most product categories.

AuraDPP provides both services: the EU AR service (from €99/month) and the DPP platform (from €19/month). Shopify merchants can address both obligations in a single subscription.

Does AuraDPP Have a Shopify App?

AuraDPP provides a Shopify-compatible DPP workflow that integrates with your Shopify store. After creating your DPP records in AuraDPP, you receive QR codes and DPP page URLs that you can add to your Shopify product listings. The DPP pages are hosted by AuraDPP and accessible via the QR codes on your products and packaging.

Frequently Asked Questions: Shopify Digital Product Passport

Does my Shopify store need a Digital Product Passport?
It depends on what you sell. As of July 2026, no product category has a legally mandatory DPP requirement under ESPR except for certain batteries under the Battery Regulation. However, if you sell textiles, electronics, or furniture to EU customers, DPP requirements are anticipated from approximately 2027 onwards. Preparing now avoids last-minute compliance pressure.
How do I add a Digital Product Passport to Shopify?
You create your DPP data record in a DPP platform like AuraDPP, generate a QR code linked to your DPP page, and add the QR code to your Shopify product pages (as an image, in the product description, or via metafields) and to your product packaging.
What is the difference between GPSR and ESPR for Shopify sellers?
GPSR (EU 2023/988) requires non-EU Shopify sellers to appoint an EU Authorized Representative — this is already mandatory since December 2024. ESPR (EU 2024/1781) will require Digital Product Passports for textiles, electronics, and other categories — this is anticipated from 2027 onwards but not yet legally mandatory.
Can I use the same QR code for all my Shopify products?
No. Each product requires its own unique DPP with product-specific data (material composition, certifications, etc.) and its own QR code. The QR code links to a product-specific DPP page containing that product's sustainability and compliance information.
Does AuraDPP integrate with Shopify?
AuraDPP provides a Shopify-compatible DPP workflow. After creating your DPP records, you receive QR codes and DPP page URLs that you can add to your Shopify product listings. AuraDPP also provides the EU Authorized Representative service for Shopify sellers who need GPSR compliance.
