EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542

EU Battery Passport
Digital Product Passport for Batteries

The EU Battery Regulation requires a Digital Battery Passport for all industrial, EV and LMT batteries sold in the EU from 2027. AuraDPP helps you create compliant battery passports with QR codes.

What is an EU Battery Passport?

The EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542) requires manufacturers and importers to create a Digital Battery Passport — a digital record accessible via QR code that contains detailed information about the battery.

The battery passport must include: battery composition, carbon footprint, performance data, state of health, and end-of-life handling instructions.

It is part of the broader EU Digital Product Passport initiative under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

Battery Composition

Materials, chemicals, and hazardous substances used in the battery

Carbon Footprint

CO₂ emissions from manufacturing, transport, and end-of-life

Performance Data

Capacity, energy density, cycle life, and state of health

QR Code Access

Accessible via QR code on the battery label — no app required

The requirement applies to batteries sold in the EU, regardless of where they are manufactured:

Industrial batteries (≥2kWh) from February 2027
Electric vehicle (EV) batteries from February 2027
Light means of transport (LMT) batteries — e-bikes, e-scooters
Manufacturers and importers of batteries
Non-EU battery manufacturers selling in the EU
Companies using batteries in their products

Note: Portable batteries (e.g., AA, AAA, phone batteries) have different and later requirements. Check the full regulation for details.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EU Battery Passport?

An EU Battery Passport is a digital record required under EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542. It contains information about the battery's composition, carbon footprint, performance, and end-of-life handling. It is accessed via a QR code on the battery.

When is the EU Battery Passport required?

The EU Battery Passport is required for industrial batteries (≥2kWh) and EV batteries from February 18, 2027. LMT batteries follow later. Portable batteries have different requirements.

Is the Battery Passport the same as a Digital Product Passport?

The Battery Passport is a specific type of Digital Product Passport (DPP) under the EU's ESPR framework. AuraDPP supports both general DPPs and battery-specific passports.

Can AuraDPP create Battery Passports?
